Mental & Emotional Wellbeing

Mood Elevation & Stress Reduction:

Studies from Rutgers and Texas A&M show that interacting with flowers decreases anxiety, improves mood, and fosters positive social interaction. *

Cognitive Engagement:

Choosing colors, designing arrangements, and following steps stimulates focus and creative problem-solving — similar to art therapy or occupational therapy benefits.

Social Connection:

Working together in a shared activity promotes conversation and a sense of belonging, which combats loneliness and isolation — both major risk factors for cognitive decline and depression among older adults.

Physical Wellness

Fine Motor Coordination:

Handling stems, trimming leaves, and placing blooms encourages gentle hand and wrist movement, supporting dexterity and joint flexibility.

Sensory Stimulation:

Engaging multiple senses (touch, smell, sight) can boost mood and awareness, especially beneficial for residents with early dementia or limited mobility.

Light Movement:

The setup and creation process involves mild physical activity — standing, reaching, light lifting — which encourages movement in a safe, supportive environment.

Social Connection

Physical Benefits:

Socialization is key in reducing cognitive decline and increasing lifespan. It is also instrumental in decreasing stress and improving sleep quality.

Reduce Loneliness:

Activities within the community provide an opportunity to build lasting connections and a sense of belonging. Seniors that develop friendships are less likely to become depressed, and can combat illness faster.

Quality of Life:

Regular interaction with those around them improves self esteem and creates a more positive outlook on life.
